The sinking of investigative journalism?

We know that doing an investigate journalism is time consuming and sometimes it required huge amount of money in order to track the investigation. This process could take up to months or even years to complete the undercover investigation. There is exceptionally less investigative journalism being carried out now than there was in the 1980s. The public’s attention span and support for investigative journalism has shrunk, and this can be seen by the trend of entertainment and any other lighter stories (Minchin 2001). Investigative journalism is essential, because the citizen journalist could bring up or sparks on a certain issue which leftover in the past, it is possibly for a journalist to carry out the investigation which they believe there is still something left behind which is untold in the report. Back to the 80s, technology was not that effective comparing to present, the quality of camera, the video recorder, voice recorder, the convenient in accessing to the internet, were not the easy back then. Therefore, just because with the advancement of technology, the cost of those equipment has become an issue for the people in the newsroom particular, the editor, to decide whether to continue with investigative journalism in nowadays.

Issue in reporting for a global audience.

Everyone have the ability to access to the internet, it just within a second, a person can access to the global internet whenever they want to. It does not matter whether a modern journalist or traditional journalist, it becomes a challenge for them to report an issue to a global audience. This comes to the mind that, different local cultural practices, language barrier, different perception and interpretation towards the reporting. However, Freeman (2008) said that what is reported now, will reach to an international audience and will impact how the nations view their constituency and their place in the world. Therefore, it is very important for journalist to filter their work, facts check before publishing to online news portal. Besides that, when reporting to a global audience, transparency in reporting is very crucial for a news agency in term of the reputation of the company. An honest and truthful reporting with zero bias is what the people around the world are expecting from the news agency. Moreover, it is not advisable for a journalist to use their local jargon or slang into their write up, because reporting to a global audience may not understand the slang or jargon, therefore, it may cause an unprofessional image towards the news agency. Lastly, story framing and using a different cultural source from different country can makes the story stay relevant and credible (Lieb 2009, p. 293-306). A journalist should know what to report when comes to not only local but global.

Making stories relevant to an online audience

It is important for a journalist to stay where they should and stay within the reporting process. Once an information disseminate beyond the line, the information could be misinterpreted. Therefore, staying relevant on what it should be is very crucial for a journalist to keep in mind that, they should not go beyond that. Besides that, the content in the stories which published online should have the verification of the news, accountability for the trusted authority and independence towards the bias. If an online news portal contains such elements, the particular news portal could have the trust of the reader. However, what reader wants and demands is an important factor when delivering news to online audience. It is a mutual exchange between the reader and the news portal where both get what they want to achieve. According to Lieb (2008), knowing their audience and adhere few basic rules of keep headlines prompted, use bullet points, hyperlinks, and keep stories short, to ensure reader interest is gained and maintained throughout the time. In this 21st century, human behavior of not favorable in looking a long paragraph is common. Therefore, journalist should keep their stories as simple as possible and yet keep the story strong and solid to penetrate the reader mind.

What constitutes a credible source?

Any Individuals can create personal sites or blogs to write about their families, friends, work, or any other subject. The corporate company can make websites to promote their products, and publish websites to promote their cause. Anyone with an idea and Internet access can create a website and fill it with just about any content they want. In this digital world of media, the web has becoming a first priority for the media to outreach the audience, anyone can put any information on the web, and sometimes information looks more credible at the first glance than it is on closer inspection. What constitutes a credible source is actually by looking for all these factors like authority, accuracy, objectivity, currency. Credible authors will cite their sources so that readers can check the accuracy of and support for what they've written. Regardless of what type of sources they are, they must be credible. In other words, they must be reliable, accurate, and trustworthy. Then, the news or article will show proof-read with fair and balance to the reader. To determine a credible source, their name should be listed on the home page of their website, date of the information, and source contact information. All these factors could boost the source credibility and reliability to article or news being publish. However, a named source is always preferable to an unnamed source. It should never deliberately mislead when sourcing a person, or cite the sources in the plural when only have on.

Key factors affecting the preparation and delivery of online news

Journalist in the modern world of convergence must be equipped with the flexibility required to deliver news via a range of platforms, including social media, but the pressure to meet conflicting deadlines has increased with advances in modern technology. However, Journalist does not write a story relevant to all the audience on the face of the earth, instead, the audience will look for the certain category of news which actually relate to them. Besides, the newspaper industry delivers news daily throughout the day. Time is one of the biggest hindrances to the journalist because Journalist is the clock-watchers for the newspaper printing industry and has been always crucial for online journalist as they need to update news as it might get updated even by seconds. So, the need to rush and prepare latest online news to attract readers is most important and to ensure an up to date and factual account before the given deadline. Whereas, the online platform instantly updates the news to various social network platform as soon as they gathered enough information from sources. “There is an expectation that the modern journalist will send breaking news alerts via text message and email or blog post, followed by a radio or television broadcast a daily newspaper, then a comprehensive print and online story,” Lieb (2009, p.7). As a result, tradition journalist which bound to tradition reporting are required to upgrade their skills in order to produce a good online story.

Finding your own voice as a Journalist in online environment

In my opinion, online-based media where a journalist could publish a news with just a present of internet connection in the gadget device anywhere and anytime. However, the news in the age of Convergence is exciting and is the new and upcoming trend in Journalism. Consequently, the role of journalism has been challenged when the online user could upload and publish anything they wanted to in their very own self-thought information about the latest trend to the social platform. According to Mark Deuze, it is important to establish a delicate balance between finding you own voice as a journalist and engaging with active users in their dialogue. News in the online environment gives a huge impact to the journalist in the tradition media as in shifting from writing to editing will prove to be an ethical challenge and television, broadcast and online journalism each has their own culture of doing it. “The fact that its audience is not really an audience anymore.” Jay Rosen (2006). This happens when sometimes the audience also produces and provides content without filtering the raw information. I personally think that this is one of the biggest challenge being face by the Journalist of where is their actual role in online journalism nowadays.
